Jordan Calladine
My paternal settler family last name is Calladine, and we come from Treaty 4 Territory, specifically Weyburn, Regina, and Melville. My maternal Métis and Cree family last name is Bouvier, and we come from Treaties 6 and 10 Territory, particularly the communities of Beauval, Île-á-la-Crosse, Green Lake, Cole Bay, Meadow Lake, and Canoe Lake Cree First Nation. I grew up in Lethbridge in Treaty 7 Territory – the traditional and ancestral lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuu T’ina Nation and Stoney Nakoda First Nation, and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. At the time of writing, I am living, working, and studying in Saskatoon, Treaty 6 Territory and the Traditional Homeland of the Métis.
I pursued my bachelor’s degree through the University of Lethbridge Dhillon School of Business, majoring in marketing, where I also played on the varsity women’s Pronghorns rugby team for 3.5 years. My career prior to law school was in sports marketing, spending 4 years in the Western Hockey League with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Saskatoon Blades, and 2 years in the Western Canadian Baseball League with the Lethbridge Bulls. I also spent 2.5 years at the Lethbridge Sport Council as the Assistant Programs and Events Coordinator, where I published my first book “For the Love of Sport” and was deeply involved in the coordination and implementation of both the Southern Alberta Summer Games and Alberta Summer Games.
During law school I have held and continue to hold various positions. I spent my 1L summer with the Civil Law Branch of the Government of Saskatchewan in Regina and will be spending the upcoming summer in Meadow Lake Prosecutions. I am a research assistant under Dr. Jaime Lavallee, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, working on two projects involving the repatriation of Indigenous ancestors and the Rebuilding First Nations Governance Project. I sit as the VP Social for the USask Indigenous Law Students’ Association, VP Finance for the Level, Changing Lives Through Law USask Chapter, an Alternate Dispute Resolution Coach for the first-year class during their ADR intensive week, and a Debate Judge for the 2023 JDC West Competition. During the Fall 2022 semester I was a Judicial Intern with the Supreme Court of Belize. I had the honour of representing the Provincial Youth Métis Council as a Youth Representative at the November 2022 Métis Nation Legislative Assembly and I am a Director of Saskatoon Métis Local 126.
I am passionate about the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island and am so pleased to be continuing the work of those before me in advocating for the rights of our people. I have a significant interest in Indigenous self-governance and Nation building, inherent and Aboriginal rights, Nation-to-Nation relationships, and any other area that will assist in remedying the systemic injustices and discrimination faced by Indigenous peoples.
I am so excited to be working with Marilyn Poitras and the rest of her team to assist in the design of a Tribunal for Métis Nation – Saskatchewan. I bring youthful voice, passion, and insight to the team, and am looking forward to applying my increasing legal knowledge to the Tribunal.
I am an avid sports fan, albeit my love for the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, and Saskatchewan Roughriders has certainly given me some grey hairs. I love travelling, spending time with family and friends, and spending as much time as I can in the North. I am also a self-proclaimed true-crime junkie, and can often be found watching new Netflix docu-series or old episodes of Criminal Minds, Law & Order: SVU, The Good Wife or Suits!
